From 1957 to 1966 he lived in Burma, where he was a close disciple of Mahasi Sayadaw, [1] who authorized him to teach vipassana meditation. While in Burma he also studied the Pāli Canon thoroughly, [ 5 ] before returning to India, where he taught vipassana for many years in Bodh Gaya . [ 6 ]
In the 1960s, U Ba Khin’s reputation as a meditation teacher spread abroad by word of mouth of his foreign students. He started receiving invitation to teach meditation in India, United States, Holland, Germany, England, and Canada. There was also a plot of land in Hawaii that was donated for the establishment of a meditation centre.

Dhamma Joti is one of the first Vipassana meditation centres in Myanmar, founded by S.N Goenka in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Kin in accordance with the teaching of Ledi Sayadaw. The centre is situated on an area about 12 acres contributed by the venerable Bhaddanta Sobhita of Wingabar Yele Monastery.
