In this nation more than others, "windmill" is often used to refer to what are properly termed windpumps bringing up water for agriculture. This is at least partly due to usage by windpump builders Eclipse Windmill Company (1873) and Aermotor Windmill Company (1888, the sole surviving US "windmill" manufacturer [ 1 ] ).

The wind farm is composed of 4,930 [2] relatively small wind turbines of various types, making it at one time the largest wind farm in the world in terms of capacity. Altamont Pass is still one of the largest concentration of wind turbines in the world, with a capacity of 576 megawatts (MW), producing about 125 MW on average and 1.1 terawatt ...

The overall average capacity factor for wind generation in the US increased from 31.7% in 2008, to 32.3% in 2013. [43] In 2023, U.S. wind power production fell by 2% despite an increase of 6.2 gigawatts in capacity, primarily due to weaker-than-normal winds in the Midwest.

Development of the wind farm began in the 1980s. [2] It is one of the first three major wind farm areas in California, along with those at Altamont and the Tehachapi passes. As of May 2024, the wind farm consists of 666 wind turbines with a total rated capacity of 628 MW, built as part of 26 projects. [3]
