U.S. Highway 20 (US 20) in Iowa is a major east–west artery which runs across the state, separating the northern third of Iowa from the southern two-thirds. It enters Iowa from Nebraska, concurrent with Interstate 129 (I-129) and US 75, crossing the Missouri River at Sioux City.
The western route became Iowa 183, and the eastern route reverted to Iowa 136. By 1973, that new stretch of road had been extended fourteen miles (23 km) along a four-lane bypass around Ames. The old alignment became Iowa 930. [28] [29] In eastern Iowa, a new, twenty-mile-long (32 km) freeway connected DeWitt and Clinton by 1976.
Through Coralville and Iowa City, US 6 has no direct access to I-80, I-380, or US 218; other routes like Iowa Highway 1 (Iowa 1) and Iowa 965 provide direct access. From Iowa City, the highway heads to the east-southeast through West Liberty and Atalissa. Near Wilton, the route heads north to I-80 where it again overlaps to Davenport.

At another interchange near the city center, US 18 exits and heads west; Iowa 24 heads east. The four-lane road curves along the north side of town and meets the northern end of the business route. As the road curves back to the north, the divided highway ends and it becomes a two-lane road for the remainder of its trip through Iowa.
