Sweden is the first country in the history of the sport other than Canada and the United States to compete in the finals of any international women's hockey tournament. On 7 November 2008, in Lake Placid, Sweden defeated Canada for the first time in women's ice hockey with the 2–1 win in overtime at 4 Nations Cup.
