Shippensburg is located in south-central Pennsylvania primarily in Cumberland County, but extending west into Franklin County. U.S. Route 11 passes through the center of town as King Street; US 11 leads northeast 20 miles (32 km) to Carlisle, the Cumberland County seat, and southwest 11 miles (18 km) to Chambersburg, the Franklin County seat.

It was also a supply depot for the Pennsylvania militia, and for troops participating in the Forbes Expedition.
