The archaeological site includes eight excavated temple sanctuaries and covers about 12 square kilometres (4.6 sq mi), stretches 7.5 kilometres (4.7 mi) along the Batang Hari River, 80 menapos or mounds of temple ruins, are not yet restored. [1] [2] It is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient temple complexes in South East Asia.

The Batang Toru hydropower project has started work on a dam and tunnel, financed by China, which is meant to provide electric power during 6 hours a day. [7] As of 2022, Indonesian state-owned electronic distribution company Perusahaan Listrik Negara has also started to work with Indonesian private companies to establish a hydropower on the river.
