The club's first title came from the basketball team, which won the 1942/43 Regional Championship of Lisbon. This was the first of five Lisbon Championships won within a decade. The basketball team also won the Cup of Honour (predecessor of the Portuguese Cup) in 1943/44, a 2nd Division title in 1943/44, and a Portuguese Cup in 1953/54.
From the 2008–09 season onward, the competition has been again organised by the Federação Portuguesa de Basquetebol (Portuguese Basketball Federation) after not having been for 13 seasons. This was caused by the fold of the LPB after many years of financial problems, with the league now being a semi-professional league.
In 1995, basketball stopped being one of the sports practiced in the club, returning in 2012, just with the women's team. In 2019, the men's team was refounded after 24 years. Sporting submitted a proposal to go directly into the 2019–20 Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol with their men's team.

The Portuguese Basketball Federation was founded in 1927, with the national team playing in their first match on 24 May 1931, a 9–32 defeat to France. Portugal would become a co-founder of FIBA in 1932. Three years later, in 1935, Portugal played in the only qualifying game for the first European Basketball Championship.
