The company was founded by Roy and Estelle Kelley, who opened their first hotel in 1947. Halekulani (var. Halekūlani) is an oceanfront luxury hotel located on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii. Built in 1984, it contains 453 rooms in five buildings on 5 acres (20,000 m 2 ) of property. The name Halekūlani is a combination of Hawaiian words (hale + kū + lani) meaning "House Befitting Heaven".
The Waikiki Aquarium developed the first displays of living Pacific corals in the United States in 1978 using water from a seawater well and natural sunlight. [2] A special surge device was developed later to allow culture of staghorn and table corals (Acropora spp.). [3] Some of the corals at the Waikiki Aquarium are over 30 years old. [4]
