Hiplife's history dates back to the early 1990s. Jeff Tennyson Quaye, better known around the world as Jay Q, one of the pioneers of hiplife (in the mid-1990s), is considered the backbone of Ghana music as a whole; in recognition of his own variation and introduction of Jama/kpanlogo to hiplife, he has been called the King of Jama. However the hip life group conquered the Ghana music charts with their 2003 album Ahomka Womu; their single also named "Ahomka Womu" was number one on the Ghanaian charts for over 20 weeks. VIP won five awards at the Ghana Music Awards from the hit single and the group gained international exposure after this success. [ 4 ]

In the year 2006, he won the Hiplife Artiste of the Year as well as the Hiplife Album of the Year, with his song "Toffee". This award won him so much recognition in and outside Ghana. [8] In the year 2011, he won the Best Hiplife Song of the Year which featured Asamoah Gyan with the song "African Girls". [8]
His popular and hit debut album "Pae Mu Ka", for which he won 3 awards during the 2000 edition of Ghana Music Awards is arguably one of the best selling albums in Ghana.
