A nursery rhyme is a traditional poem or song for children in Britain and other European countries, but usage of the term dates only from the late 18th/early 19th century. The term Mother Goose rhymes is interchangeable with nursery rhymes.
The melody commonly associated with the rhyme was first noted by the composer and nursery rhyme collector James William Elliott in his National Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs (1870). [3] For the original version, there is no 'do' in 'what did you there'.
The verses used today are the first of a longer chapbook history first published in 1764. [1] The character of Simple Simon may have been in circulation much longer, possibly through an Elizabethan chapbook and in a ballad, Simple Simon's Misfortunes and his Wife Margery's Cruelty, from about 1685. [1]
The earliest recorded version of the rhyme is in Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book, published in London in May 1744, which uses the opening line: 'Hickere, Dickere Dock'. [1] The next recorded version in Mother Goose's Melody (c. 1765), uses 'Dickery, Dickery Dock'. [1]
"Itsy Bitsy Spider" singing game "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" (also known as "The Incey Wincey Spider" in Australia, [1] Great Britain, [2] and other anglophone countries) is a popular nursery rhyme, folksong, and fingerplay that describes the adventures of a spider as it ascends, descends, and re-ascends the downspout or "waterspout" of a gutter system or open-air reservoir.
The song was featured on YouTube in 2007, where it was used in an Indian commercial for the 5 Star chocolate brand. [4] It was also featured on YouTube as a nursery rhyme in 2009 by the channel Shemrock Nursery Rhymes. [5] The nursery rhyme has been recreated by many other edutainment YouTube channels targeting young children. [6]
