The first generation was built on the platform of the Impreza in the style of a taller station wagon, a style that continued to the second generation, while the third-generation model onwards moved towards a crossover SUV design.
It is a more off-road-oriented version of the Crosstrek, and the third vehicle to be launched under Subaru's "Wilderness" brand. The suspension is raised to 9.3 inches (240 mm), which is 0.6 inches (15 mm) more than the standard Crosstrek's 8.7 inches (220 mm) of ground clearance. The roof rack is rated for 700 pounds (320 kg).
