The Quinault Rain Forest is a temperate rain forest, which is part of the Olympic National Park and the Olympic National Forest in the U.S. state of Washington in Grays Harbor and Jefferson Counties. The rain forest is located in the valley formed by the Quinault River and Lake Quinault .
It is located in the glacial-carved Quinault Valley of the Quinault River, at the southern edge of Olympic National Park in the northwestern United States. One of the most dominant features of Lake Quinault is its location within the Quinault Rainforest, a temperate rain forest. Lake Quinault is owned by the Quinault Indian Nation. [1]
The Olympic Peninsula is home to temperate rain forests, including the Hoh, Queets Rain Forest, and Quinault. Rain forest vegetation is concentrated primarily in the western part of the peninsula, as the interior mountains create a rain shadow effect in areas to the northeast, resulting in a much drier climate in those locales.
The Wild Olympics campaign is an effort to designate additional areas on the Olympic Peninsula as protected.. Under a bill introduced by United States Senator Patty Murray in January 2014 logging on an additional 126,554 acres (20%) of the Olympic National Forest's lands would be disallowed under the creation of nine new wilderness areas and expansion of the five existing ones.
Lake Quinault lies about 15 miles to the west. Elevations in the wilderness vary from 300 to 4,509 feet above sea level. The highest elevation is an unnamed peak; the second-highest elevation is Colonel Bob Mountain at 4,492 feet. The wilderness is a temperate rain forest with annual rainfall greater than 150 inches (3,800 mm). [4]
The highway travels on the southwest side of the lake, crossing the Quinault River, and provides access to several recreational areas in the nearby Olympic National Park, including the Quinault Rainforest. The Quinault River's drainage basin is 188 square miles (487 km 2) in area. [3] Its main tributaries include the North Fork Quinault River, Graves Creek, Fox Creek, and Cook Creek. [2] A well maintained trail follows the East Fork of the Quinault from Graves Creek to the Enchanted Valley Ranger Station through old growth rain forest. [4]
