The housing project was built in 1940 and provided affordable housing for the African-American community. The Matthew Henson Public Housing Project district is located on the west side of Seventh Avenue just south of the Sherman Street alignment. It was named as a historic district by the Phoenix Historic Property Register in June 2005.
