The Palm Desert Library will open on July 1st, 2024 as a City of Palm Desert operated library after the City Council made the decision in 2023 t otake over library operations. The original Palm Desert Library opened its doors in 1962 on Portola Avenue, where it remained for 33 years.
The library was founded on December 13, 1904, when the city passed Ordinance No. 150. The Woman's Christian Temperance Union had previously donated 250 books to the city. The library, when it opened in 1905, was originally located on the upper floor of the Bank of Oceanside's building but relocated to a room on Third Street in February 1915.
