Skagit Valley Hospital was founded in 1958. The operations of the hospital are overseen by a seven-member Board of Commissioners, elected by the district's constituents. In June 2007, the hospital opened a 220,000 square foot expansion, at a cost of $95 million. [ 2 ]

A central location in the Skagit River Valley, the city is located 51 miles (82 km) south of the U.S.–Canada border and 60 miles (97 km) north of Seattle. The population was 35,219 at the 2020 census , [ 2 ] making it the 35th most-populous city in Washington , with 62,966 people living in its urban area.
Providence Hospital was created when the Sisters of Providence purchased the Monte Cristo Hotel in 1904 and converted it into a hospital with 75 beds, [2] [3] [4] admitting its first patient on April 5, 1905. [5] It was staffed by 11 Sisters and 3 other employees. In its first year, the new hospital served over 400 patients. [3]
