The Washburn Ichabods are the athletic teams that represent Washburn University, located in Topeka, Kansas, in intercollegiate sports as a member of the NCAA Division II ranks, primarily competing in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) since the 1989–90 academic year.

Ichabod Washburn (1798–1868) was an American Congregational deacon and industrialist from Worcester County, Massachusetts. His financial endowments led to the naming of Washburn College, now Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and the foundation of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts .

Washburn's football program dates back to 1890. [2] The Ichabods claimed one MIAA conference championship in 2005, but 12 conference championships all together. Under Craig Schurig, the Ichabods have appeared in the Division II playoffs in 2005, 2007, and 2011; and competed in bowl games in 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2017.

He attended Washburn College, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Fraternity, the yearbook editor and designer. He graduated in 1934 with a degree in economics and a minor in art. [1] [2] [3] A facility called the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center now stands at Washburn. In 1938, Thompson designed the college's mascot, The Ichabod. [4]
