Morchella, the true morels, is a genus of edible sac fungi closely related to anatomically simpler cup fungi in the order Pezizales (division Ascomycota).These distinctive fungi have a honeycomb appearance due to the network of ridges with pits composing their caps.
G. esculenta resembles the various species of true morel, although the latter are more symmetric and look more like pitted gray, tan, or brown sponges. Its cap is generally darker and larger. [21] G. gigas, G. infula and G. ambigua in particular are similar, [18] the latter two being toxic to humans. [17]
