rosborne. I don't know about the roll on, but as for the the white left on your skin, I usually just take a damp towl and gentley wipe it away a few minutes later with no bleeding. The Styptic has always worked well for me. I use the Piinaud sold at W-mart for $.99. Oct 11, 2010. #3.

  3. How long do styptic pencils last? - Badger & Blade

Then, on Easter Sunday last year, I made the classic mistake of DE shaving in a hurry and sliced the *^%$*$ out of my upper lip. I ran to CVS with a square of toilet paper pressed to my lip and saw that they only sold the huge, fat Clubman styptic pencils for $4.95 each!!!! Color me bent over a barrel. I think I paid 49 cents for the one I ...

Mtn Man. njpaddy said: Just pick up a small container of McCormick Alum, usually found in a grocery store spice aisle. Dab some on nicks with a damp finger and brush it off when dry. Stops bleeding faster than the pencil and a $3-4 jar will last for years. I've used powdered alum on nicks & weepers for 50 years.

As an alternative, you might try the local pet store and look for styptic powder, which is used to stop bleeding when trimming pet claws. I'm 98% certain that the ingredients would be the same, just in a different form (powder vs. stick) ETD: By the way, good luck in medical school! Last edited: Aug 27, 2011. Aug 27, 2011.

  7. Do any stores sell the "fat" styptic pencils anymore?

    www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/do-any-stores-sell-the-fat-styptic...

I did have a fat styptic stick at one time, but now all I could find is the same skinny one - without any paper wrapped around it like it used to be. Nude, so to speak. And a crummy stopper instead of a screw on end. In fact, it seems like everybody around here in Portland has the same supplier. Probably composed of Chinese drywall.

  8. Alum block = sceptic stick? - Badger & Blade

I think you mean "Styptic Pencil," not sceptic stick. Yes, they're basically the same thing. Same basic chemical composition, at least. A styptic pencil is used when you have a specific cut you want to treat and get the bleeding to stop. It can be from shaving, but it also works as well for cuts on your hands or elsewhere.

The powder was a light tan in color and the Barber would moisten a finger tip, touch a container of Styptic Powder, and then touch the area that was bleeding. Very efficient, if not un-hygenic. So, after starting shaving on a semi-regular basis at the age of 15, there was always a small container of Styptic Powder on hand.

It is a chemical compound whereas Aluminum Al is a metal. According to the packaging for my styptic pencil, it is 90% Aluminum Sulfate and 10% Inert Ingredients. The directions say to wet the top of the pencil (I assume this means its tip) and to pat dry it off with a towel and store it in the supplied plastic tube. 1.

  11. Styptic Pencil vs Alum Block - Badger & Blade

My understanding is that an alum block is piece of alum crystal, while a styptic pencil is powdered alum formed into a stick. While the styptic pencil is used only for patching small shaving cuts, the alum block serves a multitude of purposes. It will stop small cuts in the same way that a styptic does. Wetted and passed gently over the face ...
