In college I was taught that 5-6 dorsal spines was a white crappie and 7-8 dorsal spines was a black crappie and that it was not reliable to judge off of color alone, especially during the spawning season. With that said, those may very well be white and black crappie. Can't tell by the picture.

sure , black crappie filets look more translucent than white crappie filets and also seem to have less pink in them to me as well .... black crappie filets look bream like and whites have a tendency to look more open water filet fish to me .... always thought that and mentioned it before , but folks tend to not pay attention to my antics ....just saying
Crappie will not get much larger than 18 1/2" When they optain that length they get taller and much fatter. That is not a 4lb crappie It is probaly a 3lb fish. The attached picture is a crappie over 4lbs. you can tell they look like footballs. I wish I had caught this but it was caught in West Tenn
A 13" "Crappie" of any kind, is a big ol goodun :p ... congrats on the catch !! Trophy Size is somewhat a relative term ... but, is generally thought of as being way bigger than the normal largest sized fish that are caught from a body of water or area/region of the state or country.
