Cedar Creek originates from Big Cedar Lake in the Town of West Bend and flows east into Little Cedar Lake.It then flows east through Jackson before turning south, crossing State Highway 60 where there is a USGS gauge [4] and briefly flows through Grafton before entering Cedarburg's north side.
Most of Cedarburg's early settlers were German immigrants. Ludwig Wilhelm Groth is usually credited with being the first settler of Cedarburg. He purchased land from the government on October 22, 1842, and began platting the banks of Cedar Creek. In 1845, Frederick Hilgen and William Schroeder built a wooden gristmill on Cedar Creek.

In 1842 Ludwig Groth bought land that would become the village of Cedarburg and in 1844 platted the village. Fredrick Hilgen arrived after 1845 [4] and built a gristmill on Cedar Creek. Over the years, and with business partners, Hilgen also started a sawmill, a planing factory, and a woolen mill.
The mill incorporated as the Cedarburg Woolen Company in 1872, with Dietrich Wittenberg serving as president. The owners constructed additional buildings, including offices, a shipping department, a coachhouse, bleaching and dying facilities, warehouses on both sides of the creek, and a factory store.
The Columbia Historic District is a neighborhood in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.At the time the district was listed on the register, its contributing properties included 128 historic homes, one church, and eighty-seven historic outbuildings, including garages and barns, all constructed between 1844 and 1938.
