The Longview metropolitan statistical area is a metropolitan area in Northeast Texas that covers four counties—Gregg, Harrison, Rusk, and Upshur. As of the 2010 census the MSA had a population of 280,000 (though a July 1, 2019 estimate placed the population at 286,657).
Loop 281 begins at a partial cloverleaf interchange with I-20/US 259/SH 322 in southern Longview; the highway continues south past I-20/US 259 as SH 322. The highway travels in a slight northwest direction along Estes Parkway for approximately 0.5 miles (0.80 km) before turning to the west, with Estes Parkway continuing north towards LeTourneau University.

The town came into being as a crossroads community in the 1880s. The intersection of four "lanes" furnished the town's name. This area was settled by wealthy men who enjoyed the redlands and encouraged other people to avoid sandy spots. The town was granted a post office in 1888 with Philetus Williamson as its first postmaster.
