"Uncle John's Band" is a song by the Grateful Dead that first appeared in their concert setlists in late 1969. The band recorded it for their 1970 album Workingman's Dead. Tiger is a custom-built guitar owned by Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia. Garcia commissioned luthier Doug Irwin to design and build the guitar in 1973 following delivery of Wolf, his first major Irwin-built guitar. Upon commissioning the instrument, Garcia asked Irwin to "make it the way he thought was best, and don't hold back."
As was often the case during this period, they were the opening act for the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia was a member of both bands. He would play pedal steel guitar for NRPS, and then play electric guitar and sing for the Dead. A Grateful Dead album recorded the following night is Dick's Picks Volume 2.
