Sterling is a city in Whiteside County, Illinois, United States, along the Rock River.The population was 14,782 at the 2020 census, down from 15,370 in 2010.Formerly nicknamed "Hardware Capital of the World", the city has long been associated with manufacturing and the steel industry.
WZZT launched on April 10, 1991; as of 1992, the station was owned by Whiteside Communications, Inc., and was transmitting at 3,000 watts. The Sinnissippi Mounds are part of the Sterling Park District's largest park, Sinnissippi Park. The park was acquired in parcels beginning in 1934. [ 4 ] The area of the park where the mounds are found, located on a bluff overlooking the Rock River, was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on May 14, 1979, as the Sinnissippi Site.
