Orcutt is an unincorporated town in Santa Barbara County, California, United States. Located in the Santa Maria Valley, Orcutt is named for William Warren Orcutt, the manager of the Geological, Land and Engineering Departments of the Union Oil Company. The population of Orcutt was 28,905 at the 2010 census, up from 28,830 at the 2000 census.

The Orcutt Union School District is located in Santa Barbara County on the central coast of California. There are six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one charter school, which first began on August 20, 2008. There are approximately 5,040 students and more than 500 staff members.
State Route 135 is the original routing for US 101 from Santa Maria to Los Alamos until the current alignment was completed in 1933. However, instead of turning east just before old town Orcutt and then north into Santa Maria as it does currently, it continued north along what is now Graciosa Road and then Marcum Street linking up with E. Clark Avenue just north of the Orcutt water tower.
In the Orcutt field, oil has pooled in a dome-like structure bounded on the north by the Orcutt Fault and on the southwest by the Casmalia Fault, at a minimum depth of 900 feet (270 m) in a diatomite formation. The deepest oil-producing horizon was not discovered until 1981, and yields oil from about 9,300 feet (2,800 m) below ground surface.
The type locality was near San Quintin Bay in Baja California. [1] O. californica was not collected again until 1922. [2] Orcuttia greenei was described by Vasey in 1891 from collections near Chico, Butte county, [3] but it was later transferred to Tuctoria (an anagram of Orcuttia). Early on the Sunday morning of April 25, 1965, 16-year-old Michael Andrew Clark opened fire on cars traveling along U.S. Highway 101 just south of Orcutt, California from a nearby hilltop. Three people were killed and ten were wounded before Clark committed suicide upon arrival of police.
In 1993 it was known from fewer than 20 occurrences, including those at the Santa Rosa Plateau, a creek drainage near Hemet, Otay Mesa in San Diego County, and one spot in Woodland Hills.
