Passenger rail service by Amtrak is available at Utica, nearby to the west of the county. Up to the latter 1950s, New York Central Railroad trains such as the North Shore Limited (New York-Chicago) made stops at Little Falls. [20] Until 1965, the New York Central operated passenger trains through Thendara in the upper part of the county. [21] [22]
New York State Route 167 (NY 167) is a north–south state highway in the Mohawk Valley region of New York in the United States. It extends for 26.17 miles (42.12 km) from an intersection with U.S. Route 20 (US 20) in the Otsego County village of Richfield Springs to a junction with NY 29 in the Herkimer County village of Dolgeville.
NY 29 begins at an intersection with NY 28 and NY 169 in Middleville, a small village situated on West Canada Creek in western Herkimer County.The route heads east, passing out of the village and into the towns of Fairfield and Salisbury, where NY 29 intersects NY 170 and NY 170A, respectively, on opposite sides of the town line.
NY 29A was realigned to follow the new state highway—reaching NY 29 3 miles (5 km) farther east than before—while the portion of its former routing on Steele Avenue Extension south of the Gloversville city line became NY 920J, an unsigned reference route 2.08 miles or 3.35 kilometres in length.
New York State Route 28, Main Street, is a north–south highway through the village, leading northwest 4 miles (6 km) to Poland and southeast the same distance to Middleville. Herkimer, the county seat, is 12 miles (19 km) to the south of Newport on NY 28. County Road 34 passes through the part of Newport on the west bank of West Canada Creek.
