North Chicago is a city in Lake County, Illinois, United States, and a suburb of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 30,759 at the 2020 census [ 2 ] making it the third-most populous city by population in the county, after Waukegan and Mundelein .
In 1931, it was rerouted away from Zion and Winthrop Harbor while IL 42 north of Chicago remained untouched. [3] In 1935, an entire section of US 41 between Chicago and Waukegan was realigned to a new alignment. The new alignment closely matched the current routing of US 41. [4] By 1939, Skokie Highway (part of US 41) was fully completed.
In 1971, US 30 Alt. in Illinois was discontinued, renamed as IL 38 west of Westchester, and dropped through the city of Chicago. [ 2 ] Since a 2008 realignment, US 30 passes a mile (1.6 km) to the north of downtown Plainfield on 143rd Street, then turns south onto IL 59 (Division Street) for approximately one mile (1.6 km).
