Chuquicamata (/ tʃ uː k iː k ə ˈ m ɑː t ə / choo-kee-kə-MAH-tə; referred to as Chuqui for short) is the largest open pit copper mine in terms of excavated volume in the world. [ citation needed ] It is located in the north of Chile , just outside Calama , at 2,850 m (9,350 ft) above sea level.

Plans to go underground and mine the rest of the Chuquicamata orebody by block caving are now well advanced. At the SIMIN conference in 2007 in Santiago [16] Codelco engineers detailed a possible future mining plan. The open pit is becoming gradually uneconomic and it was estimated that mining would slow down and stop by 2020.
It is 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) long, 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) wide and with a depth of 850 metres (2,790 ft) it is the second deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA). Note: to get a feeling of the scale spot out a haul truck, which is 9.5 metres (31 ft) long and 4.5 metres (15 ft) high.
