Harford was in the former Central New York Military Tract in a tract called "Virgil". The area was first settled circa 1803. The town was established in 1845 from part of the town of Virgil. By 1865, the population was 888. In the 1970s, Cornell University bought extensive tracts of land for livestock research.
The Hartford Audubon Society was founded in 1909 as the Hartford Bird Study Club. [3] [4] The club's initial aims included advancing ornithological knowledge, protecting birds, and "interesting the general public" in the welfare of birds. [4] The club began offering lectures on birds and conservation in 1909 and guided walks in 1911.
Discussions of building a golf course in Keney Park began as early as 1916 as a means to alleviate congestion in Hartford's Goodwin Park. [1] Goodwin Park was the city's only public golf course at the time, and there was a growing consensus that a new course would help reduce the crowds at Goodwin and improve the skill-set of Hartford players by creating a more challenging course. The Hartford Club began as a union of local men's clubs amalgamated due to financial woes. It began admitting women members in the 1970s. Its present clubhouse, located at 46 Prospect Street, was designed in 1901 by Robert D. Andrews of Andrews, Jaques & Rantoul and was completed in 1903. [2] It opened on January 1, 1908. [1] [2] [3]
