A story of romantic love, esp. one which deals with love in a sentimental or idealized way; a book, film, etc., with a narrative or story of this kind. Also as mass noun: literature of this kind. Overlap is also sometimes found between the above terms, when literary romance also contains a strong love interest.
It was often spread throughout coteries, published while trying to remain true to the writer's vision without criticism. Amatory fiction predates, and in some ways predicts, the invention of the novel and is an early predecessor of the romance novel. Indeed, many themes of the contemporary romance novel were first explored in amatory fiction.
The Wheel of Love contains 20 works of short fiction by Joyce Carol Oates published by Vanguard Press in 1970.
