I believe song titles usually go in quotes instead of italics because songs are fairly short. Similarly, an article title would go in quotes and a book title would usually be in italics. The main time italics cancels italics is when the outer text is already italics, and there needs to be emphasis for a different set within; such as a book title within an italicized quote, or perhaps an individual foreign word inside a book title.
