In 1900 seismic monitoring equipment was installed for recording earthquakes. Coats Observatory was one of the stations across the world which recorded the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

The Paisley Philosophical Institution (sometimes referred to as the Paisley Philosophical Society) is a cultural and educational organisation based in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. It was founded on 8 October 1808 with the aim of educating members in scientific matters, creating a museum and establishing a library.
Coats was a collector of Scottish coins, and his collection became the largest and most valuable of its kind. He wanted a catalogue of the specimens, and entrusted the work to Edward Burns, a Scottish numismatist. But in Burns's hands the catalogue swelled into an elaborate Coinage of Scotland (1887). It was unfinished at the time of Coats's death.
