The vast majority of the trees in cultivation are selected cultivars with a fastigiate crown, with erect branches forming a narrow to very narrow crown often less than a tenth as wide as the tree is tall. The dark green "exclamation mark" shape of these trees is a highly characteristic signature of Mediterranean town and village landscapes.
Cypress is a common name for various coniferous trees or shrubs from the Cupressus genus of the Cupressaceae family, typically found in warm-temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, Europe, and North America.
Cypress are evergreen trees or large shrubs, growing to 5–40 m (16–131 ft) tall, exceptionally up to 102 m tall (the second-tallest tree species on earth, after Sequoia sempervirens) in Cupressus austrotibetica. [5]
Hesperocyparis goveniana is an evergreen tree with a conic to ovoid-conic crown, very variable in size, with mature trees of under 1 m (3 ft 3 in) on some sites, to 50 m (160 ft) tall in ideal conditions. [8] The foliage grows in dense sprays, dark green to somewhat yellow-green in color.
The second and sixth tallest trees, both redwoods, were also found at Redwood National Park in 2006 when Hyperion was found, and were named Helios 114.8 metres (377 ft), and Icarus 113.1 metres (371 ft) tall. [3]
Guadalupe cypress is a coniferous evergreen tree with a dome-shaped and broad crown when fully mature. [3] The species is variable in size, with mature trees reaching 12–20 metres (39–66 ft) tall, though they are noted as being towards the lower end of this range in their native habitat in the 2000s.
