The 1990 -A2 upgrade was a completely different truck: a Freightliner Trucks design with a different engine and transmission, hood and cab. Older models were upgraded to -A4 standard with a new cab and frame that used the original truck's components. Starting in 2009 M915A3s were upgraded to the armored -A5 standard.
All models of the M939 share a common basic chassis, cab, hood, and fenders. The basic truck is a 6×6 (three axles, six wheels, all of which are powered) heavy truck. Early M939s were rebuilds of M809 vehicle chassis with a new automatic transmission, transfer cases, cab, and hood. Suffix –A2 are new production with later model Cummins engine.
Freightliner Trucks is an American semi truck manufacturer. [1] Founded in 1929 as the truck-manufacturing division of Consolidated Freightways (from which it derives its name), the company was established in 1942 as Freightliner Corporation. [2]
The 4200/4300/9000i design remained largely unchanged from their introduction in 1970 until replaced by the new generation 9000i series in 1999. The 9000i were almost exclusively used as semi-tractors but a few straight trucks were built. [60] They used an aluminum day-cab also used by the PayStar 5000 conventional and had a long rectangular hood.
Named AeroMax L9000, the new design was an extensive upgrade of the L-9000. While sharing the same cab of the medium-hood LS-9000, the Aeromax used a set-back front axle to add a form-fitting front bumper with swept front fenders. For the first time in a North American truck, automotive-style composite headlights were used.
