The new Huntington Beach Library started its existence in 1967 when librarian Walter Johnson created a program citing the library needs for a growing community and the library board selected the Talbert Avenue site. The City Council then decided to place the library program on the ballot. The issue failed on the election held on November 5, 1968.
The Library was dedicated in 1951 by Huntington Beach Mayor Vernon Langenbeck. The Main Street Branch Library held a collection of between 40,000 and 50,000 books and served as the main public library for the community from 1951 up until 1975.
