He penned 3,000 songs, a third of them gospel, including " Take My Hand, Precious Lord " and " Peace in the Valley ".

Dorsey was the first African American to serve as sheriff of DeKalb County. When Dorsey lost a 2000 runoff election to challenger Derwin Brown, he arranged Brown's murder.
