The siege of Osaka (大坂の役, Ōsaka no Eki, or, more commonly, 大坂の陣 Ōsaka no Jin) was a series of battles undertaken by the Japanese Tokugawa shogunate against the Toyotomi clan, and ending in that clan's destruction. Divided into two stages, the winter campaign and the summer campaign, it lasted from 1614 to 1615.
In the 17th century, after the fall of Osaka to the forces of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu several survivors of the Toyotomi clan try to deliver a young prince to safety. They are betrayed by other survivors who want to enrich themselves under the pretext of re-establishing their clan.
Sanada Maru (真田丸) is a 2016 Japanese historical drama television series and the 55th NHK taiga drama. [1] The series is named after the Sanada Maru, a fortification defended by Sanada during the Siege of Osaka in 1615.

The Castle of Osaka was symbolic as it was the power-base of the Tokugawa Bakufu in Western Japan. It was also historically significant and it had been the location of the Siege of Osaka, the decisive battle which established the power of the Tokugawa more than two centuries before. [1]
