SR 865 connects to Estero Island via the Matanzas Pass Bridge. The historic southern terminus of SR 865 is an interchange between Interstate 75 (I-75 or SR 93) and Bonita Beach Road in Bonita Springs, though the current county designation actually begins 2.2 miles (3.54 km) east of the interchange near Logan Boulevard.
With this new route, the Port Everglades Expressway was then planned to be built as an Interstate highway designated I-595 to provide an Interstate connection between I-75 and I-95. After US 41 was rerouted to its present alignment in 1976, the former route was redesignated SR 887. [5] SR 887 was turned over to county control in both Lee and Collier Counties in the early 1980s. Bonita Springs became an incorporated city in 1999, and all of CR 887 in Lee County is now controlled by the City of Bonita Springs. [2]
