In 1890, the privately owned Toronto Street Railway started a horsecar service on Bloor Street between Sherbourne and Bathurst Streets. In 1891, the Toronto Railway Company (again privately owned) took over the line and extended horsecar service west to Dufferin Street. In 1893, the TRC replaced the horsecars on the route with electric streetcars.
