After independence of Bangladesh this college was named Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts. M.F.A. course has been started here since 1978. Art History department started MFA course in 1991 and honors course in 2001. In 1983 this college merged as institute in Dhaka University. Honors course has been started since 1992-93 session.
In 1956, a new course curriculum and the semester system were introduced at the college. [13] On 1 June 1962, in order to create facilities for postgraduate studies and research, the college was upgraded to East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology (EPUET), becoming the fourth university of the then East Pakistan. Marhum Moyen Uddin Pramanik and Marhum Rasidullah Sardar of Fulbari donated land to build a permanent building for the college. In 1941, the college was sanctioned by Calcutta University with the efforts of Sir Azizul Haque, who was the Education Minister of Non-separated Bengal. In 1968, the college was recognized as a government college.

The prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation-stone of MBSTU at Santosh, Tangail in 1999. Aminul Hoque was appointed as the founder project director on 7 January 2001.
