In 1927, the TFAA began a visual arts touring program that brought selected works of art to communities throughout the state. [3] In 1943, Clara Driscoll deeded her Austin estate, Laguna Gloria, to the TFAA, [4] which operated the facility as an art museum until 1961, when the Laguna Gloria Art Museum, Inc. assumed that responsibility. [5]
The museum still maintains its original home on the Clara Driscoll estate, where it was known for 34 years as Laguna Gloria Art Museum. Once owned by Stephen F. Austin , [ 3 ] the Laguna Gloria site has been declared a national treasure and is on city, state , and national registers of historic places. [ 4 ]
In 1943 Driscoll donated the homesite to be used as a city museum. In 1961, the site was converted to the Laguna Gloria Art Museum and became an important part of the Austin arts scene. Soon after, the museum began offering art classes, and in 1983, a 5,300-square-foot (490 m 2) facility was built specifically for the growing art school.

It was a project put together by former Blanton curator Claire Howard, now with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, who applied her deep knowledge of Surrealism to the materials available in Austin.

Founded in 1983 and incorporated in 1984 by Sam Coronado and Sylvia Orozco, Mexic-Arte Museum is the Official Mexican American Fine Art Museum of Texas as per the 78th Texas legislature in 2003. In 1988, the museum relocated to its current location on Congress Avenue in Austin. [1]
