Richard Ronald Eakin (born August 6, 1938) [1] was the eighth chancellor of East Carolina University. He was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania and earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics, summa cum laude, from Geneva College. He earned his master's and doctorate degree in mathematics from Washington State University in 1962
Under his watch, East Carolina gained university status in 1967. When ECU became part of the University of North Carolina System in 1972, Jenkins stayed on as chancellor, retiring in 1978. The Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center at the Brody School of Medicine and the Leo W. Jenkins Fine Arts Center on main campus were named for him.
Shingleton graduated from Stantonsburg (NC) High School, where he was class president, in 1954 and then from East Carolina University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in social studies, in 1958. [5] He went on to complete a Master of Arts degree in social studies at Appalachian State University. [6]
