Winning two state championships, in 2004 and 2006, and was televised on ESPN's 50 States in 50 Days segment on the state of Michigan. In the early morning of May 16, 2010, the "new" Homer mills, a local landmark, burned to the ground. The fire is estimated to be the biggest fire in the town's history since the high school burned down in 1943.
The area around Homer gradually became settled by farmers, and by 1856, the village had a population of about 350 people. In 1869/70, a rail line was built through the village, and two more lines were built through Homer in the next 15 years, making the village a transportation hum for the area.
The first mill in Homer was constructed about 1837 by Leon Barney and was likely located near the location of the later Cortright- H. Van Patten Co. Mill. In the 1850s, Cornelius Cuykendall Cortright moved from New York state to Michigan , settling first in Hillsdale County, then Branch County before moving to a location near Homer. [ 3 ]

This was the beginning of the village of Homer. In 1834, the territorial legislature divided the area into townships of 12-mile (19 km) squares 144 square miles (370 km 2). The township in lower Calhoun County was named Homer due to the influence of James Hopkins and many other settlers from Homer, Cortland County, New York.
