The bank was founded in 1925 in Rome as the National Bank of Albania (Albanian: Banka Kombëtare e Shqipnis, Italian: Banca Nazionale d’Albania, Albanian acronym BKS or BKSH), replaced in 1945 by the state-owned Albanian State Bank based in Tirana (Albanian: Banka e Shtetit Shqiptar, BSS or BSHSH), before taking its current name in 1992.

In 2019, the Bank of Albania unveiled a new series of banknotes, featuring the same themes as seen on the 1997 series, but with improved security features and a change in material for the 200 Lek banknote; now being issued as a polymer banknote.
Adrian Fullani also known as Ardian Fullani (born 1955) was the governor of the Bank of Albania from October 2004 until 6 September 2014. [1] He instantiated the Governor's Award, an annual award given to the best diploma dissertations prepared by Albanian undergraduate students.
