Kleinzee (IPA: klˈe͡ɪnzi) is a small village on the west coast of Northern Cape province, South Africa, located at the mouth of the Buffels River and just south of Grootmis. It is 72 km southeast of Port Nolloth and 105 km west of Springbok. Previously a closed company town, it was known for its diamond-mining operations until the 2000s.
Zeekoevlei is a freshwater lake on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, South Africa. [1] The lake is 258 hectares (640 acres) in area. [2] Its name means hippopotamus pond or lake, from the Afrikaans words seekoei (literally "sea cow") and vlei. Zeekoevlei Nature Reserve (established in June 2000) is based on the lake.
The Silvermine reservoir, on the north side, was built in 1898 to supply water to Cape Town. [1] Until 2000, there were significant pine stands in the reserve, but the last of these were felled in following the major fire in that year. The area was again burnt in March 2015 and the reserve was closed for the rest of the year. [3]
Entering the ocean in the coastal town of Muizenberg, Zandvlei is the only functioning estuary on Cape Town's False Bay coast, open to the Atlantic Ocean throughout winter and in summer the mouth is manually closed by a sand bar to contain the water, and is opened monthly for a few days at full moon to maintain salinity levels and then closed again.
