Rostraver Township has eight land borders, including Elizabeth Township in Allegheny County to the north, West Newton to the northwest, Perry and Washington Townships in Fayette County to the south, North Belle Vernon and Belle Vernon (the latter in Fayette County) to the southwest, Monessen to the west-southwest, and Forward Township in Allegheny County to the northwest.
At the 2000 census there were 1,632 people in 580 households, including 436 families, in the township. The population density was 32.1 inhabitants per square mile (12.4/km 2).

Pennsylvania Route 981 (PA 981) is a state highway which runs 50.4 miles (81.1 km) across Westmoreland County, in southwestern Pennsylvania, United States.The highway begins at PA 51 in Rostraver Township, Pennsylvania, and runs northward across Westmoreland County, passing through the towns of Mount Pleasant, Latrobe, and New Alexandria before ending at PA 819 in Salina.
