The film follows 21-year old Hiccup seeking a dragon utopia known as the "Hidden World" while coming to terms with Toothless's new bond with a female Fury, as they deal with the threat of Grimmel the Grisly, a ruthless dragon hunter.
Hiccup and Toothless accidentally land in a Hunter trap while exploring a nearby hideout, and are made prisoners in a gladiator-type arena where dragons fight each other in wagered bouts. Hiccup tries to tame the imprisoned dragons while Toothless battles in the arena, soon pitted against the resident champion, the Triple Stryke.
Hiccup stumbles and falls off the cliff, but Toothless manages to rescue him and bring him back to the stage.
