The Steelcase Plants No. 2 and 3 complex contains four buildings: a single-story brick factory building with a monitor roof constructed in 1908, a four-story brick industrial loft-type factory building constructed between 1926 and 1930, a brick power plant also constructed in 1926, and a single-story concrete block building constructed in 1953.
Lyman Woodard died in 1904, and the business passed to his sons Frank, Fred, and Lee Woodard. They dropped the sash and door products to concentrate on furniture and caskets. By the 1910s, the flu epidemic created a booming casket business, and by the 1920s the Owosso Casket Company was the world's largest casket maker.
His son, Lee, stepped in to restore the company's health. When woodworking products failed to revive the company, Woodard turned to metal furniture and converted the factory's equipment. By the mid-1920s, Woodard was again prominent in the furniture-making business and began constructing an addition to the factory. [3]
