Samuel James Ervin IV (born November 18, 1955) is a North Carolina lawyer and jurist who served on the North Carolina Supreme Court from 2015 to 2022. He previously served as a state Utilities Commissioner and as a judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals .
Ervin's son, Samuel J. Ervin, III, was appointed in 1980 to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit by President Jimmy Carter. [8] His grandson, Sam J. Ervin, IV , was elected in 2008 to the North Carolina Court of Appeals [ 36 ] and in 2014 to the North Carolina Supreme Court. [ 37 ]
Ervin served as Chief Judge of the court from 1989 to 1996. He served on the court until his death on September 18, 1999, in Morganton. [ 1 ] Among others, he was survived by his sons, Sam J. Ervin IV and Robert C. Ervin , both of whom became judges.

Robert C. Ervin (born 1960) is a North Carolina Superior Court judge who has presided over numerous high-profile cases. He is the grandson of U.S. Senator Sam J. Ervin, the son of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Samuel James Ervin III and the brother of state Supreme Court Justice Sam J. Ervin IV.
