National Primary Route 32, or just Route 32 (Spanish: Ruta Nacional Primaria 32, or Ruta 32) is a National Road Route of Costa Rica, located in the San José, Heredia, Limón provinces. [1] It connects the central valley and Greater Metropolitan Area to the Caribbean coast of the country.
As the 1970s design proved to be obsolete upon opening due to having only one lane in each direction for most of the route, there have been plans to widen the road. [5] For example, in 2017 Costa Rica’s National Concessions Council (CNC) noted that the road had reached a saturation point of 70 percent, which qualified for expansion. [6]
The road begins in the casco central (downtown, city center) districts of San José canton, just where Route 2 ends, at the east side of the La Sabana Metropolitan Park.Two segments of the route have the official names of Autopista General Cañas (General Officer Cañas Highway), between San José and Alajuela, and Autopista Bernardo Soto (Bernardo Soto Highway), between Alajuela and San Ramón.
