If an editor is adding valuable content while relying on a source they believe in good faith to be reliable, a citation is required to avoid plagiarism. Detecting plagiarism in the first place is not necessarily straightforward. Often, material is plagiarised because it is good: well-written, detailed, professionally copyedited. As editors, we're sensitive to the insertion of content that is sloppy—stuff that introduces errors of spelling, grammar, style, or fact.
